The Chess

A Visualization of A Poem

The player controls God’s piece, The piece controls the player.

Jorge Luis Borges was an Argentine writer and was renowned for his complex narratives and profound philosophical themes. This project visualizes one of my favorite poems from him, The Chess (Ajedrez).

This poem Chess intricately weaves together the game’s elements with life’s existential queries. The central theme explores the dual nature of existence, mirrored in the strategic yet predetermined confines of a chess game. Borges employs chess as a metaphor for the cosmic order and human struggle, highlighting the contrast between the game’s silent, calculated moves and the chaotic unpredictability of life.

Concept Development

Chess reflects Borges’ fascination with the game of chess as a metaphor for the complexity of life and the interplay between fate and free will.

To visualize Chess, I am using only black, white, and green. Black and white colors naturally evoke the chessboard itself, symbolizing the clear-cut decisions, dualities of life, and the contrasts between light and darkness. And introducing green can infuse the visualization with layers of meaning. Green, often associated with growth, renewal, and life, can symbolize the potential for change and the vibrancy of the human spirit within the rigid structure of the chess game.
