3D Vernacular

Abstraction concept with 3D art and design.

Overview

By studying the formal languages (or vernaculars) of real-world objects across different disciplines, this project seeks to extract these forms from their original functions and reorganize them in 3D as abstract objects that no longer serve a utilitarian purpose, but still carry cultural, historical, and psychological signifiers.

Concept Phase 1

Research existing 3D forms from disciplines outside motion design such as: Sculpture, Architecture, Industrial design, and Furniture.

Study their systems and observing how their forms express ideas such as: Detection, Protection, Orientation, Authority, Reliability, Cultural or historical context.

Remove explicit functional elements from the studied objects and reducing them to their core formal structures. By isolating mass, proportion, orientation, and enclosure, the forms are transformed into abstract, icon-like shapes that retain structural logic without revealing their original use.

Vocabulary: “Radar”

Grammar of “Radar”

        • Enclosing shell / shielding surfaces
        • Axial symmetry
        • Hierarchical scale
        • Neutral & Industrial
        • Sense of Direction / Orientation
        • Emission / Transmission and Capture / Reception
        • Translation of the invisible
        • Surveillance

Context of “Radar”

Radar, as its core, operates as:

        • the intentional emission of a signal into an uncertain environment in order to receive a response

Radar emerges only when:

        • The target is invisible or cannot be directly confirmed
        • Direct contact is impossible, forbidden, or dangerous
        • Yet making a judgment of distance is necessary, sometimes even existentially

Core Design Concept: Radar = a tool of protection + a latent weapon
